The First Decan of Gemini

Updated: Mar 28

Exploring the soul of the first 10° of Gemini.

Welcome to the first decan of Gemini! Before we jump in, if you want/need a refresher about the decans themselves, check out the introductory post in this series and then meet me back here so we can dive head first into this post together. Here's a quick overview of everything we'll be covering:

  • Planetary ruler of the decan

  • Descriptions from Ibn Ezra, the Picatrix, and Agrippa

  • The tarot card associated with the decan

  • An exploration of the decan's soul via Sun placement

Again, if you want to know the meaning of the decans themselves, what they are, and how they can be of use to us, then definitely read the first post in this series before continuing on. You all know I like to teach from a solid foundation, so knowing exactly what the decans are and the rationale behind them will be important in their interpretation. If you're solid on the concept of decans, then let's get started with the planetary ruler.

Planetary Ruler

Not only are we beginning the next 30° of a new sign and modality, but we’re also encountering the first decan in this series that’s ruled by Jupiter. This decan also marks the last of the Chaldean order. After this decan we’ll have gone through all the planetary rulers and will start the order over again. I think the first decan of Gemini is interesting because Jupiter doesn’t exactly like being in Gemini. It’s similar to the last decan of Aries where Venus takes refuge. It’s not exactly who you would expect to be there, but it can come in handy if your natal or transiting Jupiter happens to be in this decan because it gives a little boost of dignity. The reason Jupiter doesn’t jive with Gemini and Virgo (Mercury-ruled planets) is because Jupiter doesn’t run on facts. It runs on blind faith. These 10° of Gemini act as a little hideaway for energy that could be considered faith, luck, or gut-feelings. Gemini is mutable Air, and while the Air part might not resonate with Jupiter, the mutable quality does. These 10° are very intuitive and planets that reside here will be a mixture of both heart and mind.

Typically Gemini wants to see and hear the facts before they believe something or make a decision. It’s a sign that doesn’t just take someone’s word at face value. It’s always going to investigate the matter for itself to some degree. Jupiter relaxes the need to be right or to gather every bit of data before making a decision in these first 10°. It gives planets the freedom to listen to their intuition and to be okay with taking leaps of faith. Not knowing what’s on the other side is Jupiter’s specialty. These 10° of Gemini are imbued with carelessness and oblivion, but in the best way. I’ll use Mars as an example (surprise) because my natal Mars is within these degrees. I’m at my best when I’m moving through the world and making decisions in a way that I’ve described as “bumbling”. I flit and flutter to whatever calls to me and I don’t overthink it. Mars in this decan will feel sudden bursts of knowing or intuition, and those urges should always be followed. Planets cannot be overly rational when in these degrees. Of course mercurial ideals play a part because it’s the kingdom of Gemini, but overall planets here will have much better luck if they balance their mind with a little intuitive spirit.
